Alto saxophonist Louis Fouché’s debut record “Subjective Mind” has been making waves among music fans since its release on December 18, 2012. Without a record label or publicist, it became the #1 new release on Amazon mp3 jazz within the first 3 days of sales, the #1 most requested new release on WRTI 90.1 FM radio with more than 350,000 listeners, and is in rotation at radio stations internationally.

In his five-year career, alto saxophonist Louis Fouché has performed across the U.S. and internationally with world-renowned artists in various genres, including nine-time Grammy-winning Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri, two-time Edison award-winning trumpeter Christian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott), and Grammy Hall of Fame funk bassist George Porter Jr. (of The Meters), among others. Fouché wields a distinctively rich, blues-rooted sound on the saxophone, and he’s now bringing his own music to the global stage.

The "Subjective Mind" EP consists of three instrumental tracks. On each track, Fouché fuses blues and soul with a set of his diverse musical influences – starting with funk and drum & bass on the opener "Perceptive Delusion," R&B on Romberg and Hammerstein’s 1928 classic "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," and rock and classical on the closing number "Silver Lining."

Before pursuing music full-time, Fouché earned degrees in physics and chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The title of the EP, "Subjective Mind," explores the contrast between his objective, analytical focus in science and the subjective, emotional emphasis in his music.

This concert at Ginny's marks the second NYC club performance of Louis Fouché with his band since the release of his debut EP in December 2012.

His band consists of some of this generation’s most dynamic musicians – Corey Bernhard on piano, Christopher Smith on bass, and Eric Doob on drums.

Day 2: Sidney Bechet - Saxophonist extraordinnaire, Black American icon

2/2/2013

This second day of Black History Month 2013 is dedicated to one of my Black American heroes and a huge source of inspiration in my music – saxophonist/clarinetist Sidney Bechet from New Orleans. His song "Blue Horizon" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Picture
The picture to the left is Sidney Bechet posing with his soprano saxophone – cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Sidney was a soulful brother and one of the huge innovators in the music that came to be labeled as "jazz." He lived a full, interesting life, traveled internationally, and was known to be hot-tempered. It is told that Sidney pulled a gun on a dude who accused him of playing a wrong note. You can hear the love, pain, happiness, and anger in his music.

What really made him such an important musician was his incredible ability to improvise, which is spontaneous playing over a piece of music. He took the art of improvising in this new music that came to be labeled as "jazz" to the next level. He was the best

From Wikipedia:

Sidney Bechet (May 14, 1897 – May 14, 1959) was a Black American saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer.

He was one of the first important soloists in jazz (beating cornetist and trumpeter Louis Armstrong to the recording studio by several months and later playing duets with Armstrong), and was perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist. Forceful delivery, well-constructed improvisations, and a distinctive, wide vibrato characterized Bechet's playing.

Louis Fouché - Subjective Mind (2012)

Available for electronic download on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon

Available now for preorder – electronic downloads and physical CDs – at http//music.louisfouche.com

"Subjective Mind" is the debut release of up-and-coming alto saxophonist Louis Fouché. In his five-year career, Fouché, age 27, has performed nationally and internationally with renowned artists in various genres, including Latin legend Eddie Palmieri, jazz-rock trumpeter Christian Scott, funk bassist George Porter Jr. (of The Meters), and R&B singer/songwriter Gordon Chambers, among many others. Fouché wields a distinctively rich, blues-rooted sound on the alto saxophone, and he is now taking his original music onto the global stage.

The "Subjective Mind" EP consists of three acoustic tracks, serving as an introduction to Fouché's musical voice. On each track, Fouché fuses blues and jazz with a set of his diverse musical influences – starting with funk and drum & bass on the opener "Perceptive Delusion," R&B and neo-soul on the second tune "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," and classical and indie rock on the closing number "Silver Lining." The first and third tracks are Fouché’s original compositions. The classic “Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise,” written by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1928, receives Fouché's unique harmonic and rhythmic arrangement, bringing it firmly into the 21st century.

Picture
Fouché’s background is different from many musicians. Before pursuing music full-time, he earned degrees in physics and chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Music first served as an escape for Fouché, allowing him to divert his mind from his academic coursework and giving him the opportunity to journey into his creative spirit through sound. The title "Subjective Mind" reflects his unique background and explores the contrast between the objective, analytical focus of science and the subjective, emotional emphasis in music in his own life.

For the 20 minutes that the "Subjective Mind" EP runs, you can expect a wealth of harmonic textures, emotive melodies, and interactive improvisations between Fouché and the roster of accomplished young musicians who have joined him on this project: Romain Collin on piano, Luques Curtis on bass, and Eric Doob on drums.

"Subjective Mind" will be released on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, on iTunes and Amazon. The EP is available now for preorder on Fouché's online music store (http://music.louisfouche.com) as electronic downloads and physical CDs. All purchases on Fouché's online music store include a complimentary download of the album artwork and liner notes. Physical CDs come with an immediate electronic download of the EP, so you can listen to the music while you wait for the CD to arrive in the mail.

The track listing for "Subjective Mind" is as follows:
  1. Perceptive Delusion
  2. Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise
  3. Silver Lining
