I am a proud Black man, of unknown African ancestry, descended from slaves brought to the United States and Puerto Rico by force, and I hold tremendous value for my right to vote. My own grandfather -- a Black man from New Orleans, a United States citizen -- was threatened and nearly arrested for trying to vote when he was my age. Many more suffered a worse fate for trying to vote. Even if you are not Black, people throughout U.S. history have fought and died so you could participate in a democratic government and vote. Americans, take pride in your vote all year, every year. My grandfather used to say, "If they have an election for the local dog catcher, I'll be there voting."

Vote.
